In some ways it wasn't bad the first two or so books are finding their feet. Overall I enjoyed the all of books though. They all have strong plots with good central mysteries. They are police procedurals in style. A murder is committed. The police arrive and set up an incident room and begin investigating. The main characters are combined with well written book specific characters some of whom return in other books.
The cornish locations add colour to the books and given wycliffe's penchant for musing wandering offer a good backdrop. The books are well written, with good characters and good stories. I'm so pleased I tried them on a spur on the moment. I'll happily read these books again and I'd recommend them if you like good police procedural stories.

He's also troubled by the psychological strain the job puts on an essentially decent person. His wife is supportive and caring and their relationship is a strength to them both and to the series of books.

This isn't the best. It's full of faults, clumsy prose, barely concealed prejudices and well worn similes. But I never worked out whodunnit until shortly before the reveal, and I thoroughly enjoyed the read. Jan 09, Sam rated it liked it Shelves: mystery , proper-books. A body is found but it isn't the body they were looking for, are there two murders and are they connected. It was fairly obvious about half way through the book who the murderer was likely to be and I was right. A light enjoyable read and it doesn't normally take me a week to read a book but my attention was very much elsewhere with the earthquake back home in Ch A beautiful schoolgirl goes missing from a Cornish village on the day that she has told her boyfriend and sister that she is pregnant.

A dozen stories have been told about the old Dark jug. This is the true one. Several things happened in the Dark and Pen hallow clan because of it. Several other things did not happen. As Uncle Pippin said, this may have been Providence or it may have been the devil that certainly possessed the jug. At any rate, had it not been for the jug, Peter Pen hallow might to-day have been photographing lions alone in African jungles, and Big Sam Dark would, in all probability, never have learned to appreciate the beauty of the unclothed female form.
